About Me
Tom – English tutor specialising in GCSE, A-Level, and essay-based humanities
How I Came to Tutoring
I first began tutoring while studying for my Master’s (originally as a way to support myself alongside my studies), but it didn’t take long for me to realise that it was something I wanted to continue long-term.
Now, more than six years later, I’m proud to say I still love it just as much. Whether we’re conjugating verbs or exploring the symbolism of the green light in The Great Gatsby, supporting students as they learn, grow, and gain confidence remains the most rewarding part of my work.

Highly recommended.”
Who I Work With
I’m based in Manchester and work online with students across the UK, specialising in GCSE and A-Level English Literature and English Language. I work closely with students to develop a strong understanding of texts, confident written expression, and the skills needed for exam success.
Alongside this, I also teach essay-based humanities subjects, including Philosophy, supporting students in constructing clear arguments, engaging critically with ideas, and expressing complex thinking with precision and confidence.
Experience Across Different Learners
Over the years, I’ve worked with learners from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. This includes supporting international students tackling Shakespeare as a second language, helping students rebuild confidence while resitting exams, and working with trainee teachers refreshing their subject knowledge.
These experiences have given me both depth of expertise and the flexibility to adapt my teaching to individual learning styles and needs, including those with SEND.
My Approach to Teaching
My lessons are structured, supportive, and responsive, combining clear guidance with open discussion. While exam requirements and assessment objectives are always kept firmly in view, I place equal emphasis on understanding why ideas matter and how to express them clearly and confidently.
Clarity
Careful modelling and close analysis so students understand how ideas are built.
Structure
Explicit guidance on essay planning, argument development, and exam technique.
Confidence
Space for discussion, questioning, and independent thinking.
What I Believe About Learning
English and the humanities are not just subjects to be revised; they are ways of thinking. I believe students learn best when they are encouraged to explore ideas openly, ask questions, and develop confidence in their own interpretations.
Exams matter, and clarity matters. But real progress happens when students understand not only what to write, but why it works. My role is to provide structure and guidance while creating space for independence to grow.
Ultimately, my aim is not simply higher grades, but a greater confidence that carries into classrooms, interviews, and future study. When students feel secure in their thinking, improvement follows naturally.
Academic Background
I hold a Master’s degree in Gender, Sexuality and Culture from the University of Manchester, with a strong academic focus on English Literature, Theatre, and Gothic fiction. I also hold a Bachelor’s degree in Drama and English Literature.
I have over six years’ experience working one-to-one with students at GCSE and A-Level, supporting learners across a wide range of abilities and educational contexts.
My academic background informs my teaching, but always in service of clarity, confidence, and practical exam success.
