Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the questions I’m most commonly asked by parents and students. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to get in touch.

Booking & Getting Started

How do I get started?

You can begin with a free introductory conversation to discuss goals, current challenges, exam board, and availability. After that, we can schedule lessons that fit your needs.

Do I need to commit to a minimum number of sessions?

No – you can book sessions individually or in a block. That said, regular sessions over a period tend to produce the best progress.

How often should sessions take place?

Weekly tuition tends to offer good continuity. In periods leading up to exams, some families choose increased frequency.

Session Structure & Preparation

What happens in a typical session?

Sessions are interactive and tailored. We start with a clear focus, work collaboratively on writing or analysis, and finish with consolidation and clear next steps.

How Sessions Work→

Do I need to send work in advance?

You are welcome to share specific texts or questions before a lesson, but it’s not always necessary. Sending work ahead allows for more tailored planning.

Am I expected to do homework?

Homework is optional and agreed collaboratively. Where beneficial, targeted practice is suggested at the end of the session.

When looking at longer essay-style responses, I prefer to use work completed out of the session (either at school or at home) in order to maximise the usefullness of our time.

Online Technology & Platforms

What platform do lessons use?

Lessons take place on Google Meet with collaborative work in Google Docs.

Will I need to download software?

No. Google Meet works through a browser. You’ll receive a link via Google Calendar.

Pricing & Payment

How much does a session cost?

Pricing is outlined on the Pricing page.

Can I pay for multiple lessons at once?

Yes – you can book sessions individually or in blocks (e.g., six lessons with a small reduction).

How do I pay?

Payment is usually made by bank transfer or the method specified on the invoice. Details are provided ahead of receiving your first invoice.

Communication & Feedback

How do I receive feedback?

After each session, parents receive a written summary highlighting strengths, focus areas, and next steps.

Can I contact you between sessions?

Brief clarification questions are welcome via email within reasonable limits. Detailed marking outside lesson time may need additional booked time.

Cancellation & Rescheduling

What is your cancellation policy?

At least 24 hours’ notice is required to cancel or reschedule without charge. Sessions cancelled within 24 hours may be charged in full, except in exceptional circumstances.

What if my child is unwell?

If illness prevents attendance, please inform me as soon as possible. Usually we can reschedule, space permitting.

Subjects & Exam Support

Which subjects do you tutor?

English Language, English Literature, and essay-based humanities including Philosophy, Religious Studies, Drama, and related coursework support.

Do you support different exam boards?

Yes – AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas and IGCSE are all supported.

Supporting Different Learners

My child learns differently / has additional needs – is that supported?

Yes. I adapt sessions for students with different processing styles, confidence levels, or learning needs.

Safeguarding & Boundaries

Is tuition safe and professional for minors?

Yes. Sessions are conducted professionally with appropriate boundaries and respect for privacy.

Other Practicalities

Do I need books or materials?

For set texts and exam practice, you or your child may use their own syllabus materials. I work with whatever resources the student is using at school or provide recommended practice questions.

When studying GCSE or A-Level Literature, I would always recommend having a home-copy of the texts being studied – (most GCSE texts can be found free in an online format).
