What Students and Parents Say

Authentic reviews from students and parents who have worked with Tom at Literally English for GCSE and A-Level tuition.

Sharon, Parent of a GCSE Resit Student (2026)

I can’t thank Tom enough for the support he gave my son with his GCSE English Language resit. My son had previously achieved a Grade 3 and lacked confidence, particularly with extended writing and understanding exam questions, so the aim was simply to help him secure a pass. In a relatively short space of time, Tom helped him break questions down clearly, structure his answers, and most importantly, believe in himself again. Ethan was hoping for a Grade 4, so achieving a Grade 5 has meant so much more than just passing - it’s been a huge confidence boost and a real achievement. I’m incredibly proud of him and very grateful to Tom for his patience, encouragement and expert guidance. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to any parent whose child needs support with English.

Nicola, Parent of a GCSE Student (2025)

Working with Tom has been an absolute game-changer for my son’s English skills. From the very first session, Tom created a supportive and engaging learning environment that helped him feel confident and motivated. His lessons were always well prepared, tailored to my son’s individual needs, and filled with practical exercises that have significantly improved his grammar, vocabulary, and overall communication.

What truly sets Tom apart is his patience, encouragement, and deep understanding of English language and literature - while also being genuinely a nice guy! Whether they were working on writing, speaking, or exam preparation, Tom consistently provided constructive feedback and clear explanations, making even the most complex topics easy to understand.

Sarah, Parent of a GCSE Student (2025)

Tom has been a fantastic GCSE English tutor for my son in Year 11. After missing some schooling and moving schools in Year 10, Tom helped him catch up on gaps in his learning and develop both his knowledge and skills. He took a genuine interest in my son, understood his individual needs, motivated him, and helped him believe in himself.

Tom built a strong working relationship with him, and my son genuinely looked forward to his tutoring sessions. These sessions not only supported his English Language and Literature studies, but also benefited his other subjects through the exam techniques he gained. My son can now continue his education knowing he has passed his English and does not need to resit.

Tom, GCSE → A Level Student (2026)

I’ve been a student of Tom’s for about three years now. I started off not really caring for writing of any kind and, like most boys my age at the time, couldn’t really be bothered. Tom, however, with his never-ending enthusiasm, actually got me to enjoy English - I’m convinced he’s a wizard, but the jury’s still out on that. I genuinely look forward to our lessons every week.

I’ve had multiple tutors over the years, and there’s a reason I’ve stuck with Tom for so long. Lessons are always fun, but we also get the work done.

I started with Tom in Year 10 for GCSE English, where he took me from two Grade 3s to two Grade 7s in just a few months. That simply wouldn’t have been possible without his help. I’m now in Year 12 studying RPE (Religion, Philosophy and Ethics). Tom has been an excellent support with that, making difficult concepts much easier to understand and write about.

More recently, I’ve been working on a series of academic papers ranging from consciousness and cyclical time to the nature of ethics. Although this goes far beyond what I originally came to him for, Tom has helped me enormously - he even inspired me to begin the papers in the first place and is now helping me polish them for submission to an undergraduate journal.

TL;DR: Tom’s the best tutor you’re going to find. No, he didn’t pay me to say this. Whether it’s about getting the grades or tackling more advanced academic work, he’s your guy.
