GCSE mock exams are often a source of anxiety for students and uncertainty for parents. They can feel high-stakes, intimidating, and sometimes confusing - especially when the results don’t match expectations.


However, mock exams play a crucial role in a student’s GCSE journey. When understood and used properly, they are not just a rehearsal for final exams, but a powerful tool for improvement.


As a tutor, mock exams give me clear, practical insight into how a student is performing under exam conditions - not just what they know, but how they apply that knowledge when it matters.



When do GCSE mock exams take place?


Most schools run two sets of mock exams during the GCSE years.


Typically, students will sit:

  • Year 10 mocks, often towards the end of the academic year

  • Year 11 mocks, usually in November or December, and sometimes again later in the spring term


While the exact timing varies between schools, Year 11 mocks are particularly significant, as they are designed to closely replicate the final GCSE exams in terms of content, structure, and expectations.
